When you think of your financial situation and money in general, how does it make you feel? Do you feel like you never have enough, or that you have to work really hard to make money? Or do you feel like it flows to you easily and without struggle?

Do you feel anxious and nervous or excited about the opportunities that money brings you?

Your money mindset influences more than just your paycheck. It also impacts your overall happiness, self-worth, relationships with others, fulfillment, and career alignment. But how do you know if you’re living in a scarcity mindset? And how can you shift your programming so that you’ll live in a frequency of abundance?

First, let’s look at the three stages of the money mindset and identify where you’re currently at.

What is a scarcity mindset?

Most people live in a scarcity mindset regarding money, so if this is where you’re at, you’re not alone! A scarcity mindset is:

  • Constantly feeling like there’s not enough
  • Always chasing more money
  • Having a “glass half empty” mentality
  • Feeling like there’s never enough time to make money
  • Wanting what others have
  • Never putting your well-being first (i.e. not giving yourself permission to take breaks)

Living in a scarcity mindset is not only disempowering, but it’s also exhausting. Constantly chasing more money is exhausting. And the fear of not having enough casts a shadow on every aspect of your life.

What is a sufficiency mindset?

A sufficiency mindset is a step in the right direction, and most people would consider this a healthy money mindset. That said, there is still potential to reach a higher frequency and attract even more abundance into your life with some minor tweaks. A sufficiency mindset is:

  • Knowing the universe will provide exactly what you need
  • General contentment when it comes to your finances
  • Feeling like you always have enough money
  • Exploring and identifying what you really “need” in life, as opposed to what you “want.”

It takes lots of inner work to shift from scarcity to sufficiency, so getting there is a huge milestone. But while it’s great to feel confident the universe will provide what you need, the sufficiency mindset doesn’t allow you to dream big. It doesn’t give you permission to push for what you want and reach your full potential.

What is an abundance mindset?

No matter who you are and your current relationship with money, you can raise your frequency and attract abundance into your life. This might seem impossible if you live in scarcity, but anything is possible by committing to the process and releasing past programming.

The universe will help you achieve your goals while you live the lifestyle you want and crave. As long as you align with your life’s purpose, and do so without judgement, then the universe will provide. You can find out more about how to release judgement around financial freedom here

So, what does an abundance mindset look like?

  • Allowing yourself to imagine the unimaginable
  • Having goals but being open to all opportunities
  • Dreaming big
  • Believing you are deserving of money
  • Celebrating the success and wins of others
  • Giving back to others
  • Treating yourself to things that bring you joy
  • High sense of self-worth

If you want to manifest high vibrational goals, you can’t be living in a low vibration. Trust that as long as your goals are aligned with your life’s purpose, the universe will work in your favour to help you achieve them. Don’t focus on perfecting a specific plan, but instead, set the intention of what you want to achieve and how you will feel when you do so. The more energy you put into trying to control things to a T, the lower your vibration. Be adaptable.

For example, let’s say that your life’s purpose is to empower children to believe in themselves. But travelling and learning about cultures is also a huge passion of yours. Your current goals might be: make enough to pay the bills, get a job as a teacher and travel once in a while on your holidays. But you truly LOVE to travel. And you know that deep down, you’d like more than just two weeks of holiday a year to explore the world. These goals are very specific and come from a scarcity mindset.

A goal from an abundance mindset would look like: I want to have a career empowering children, and I really want to travel. I trust that the universe will bring me something amazingly unimaginable. And I will be able to fulfill my life’s purpose while living the lifestyle that I want. It’s not as specific, but there is more power behind it, and there are multiple ways this could manifest for you. It could look like travelling around the world to do empowerment work or being hired to fly to different countries and deliver workshops. Regardless, you remain open-minded.

How to shift from a scarcity to an abundance mindset

Now let’s get down to the meat of it: how can you shift your mindset from one of scarcity to one of abundance?

1. Identify where your scarcity mindset comes from

The relationship you have with money begins to form during your childhood and continues to be impacted by all your life experiences. Before you can change your programming, you need to identify why you’re programmed that way in the first place. Journalling is a great way to tap into your deeper thoughts and beliefs around money. Here are some prompts to get you started:

  • Is having money good or bad?
  • What are my thoughts about people who have more money than me?
  • What are my thoughts about people who have less money than me?
  • What was your money story when growing up?
  • What is your biggest fear regarding money?
  • Does money bring you joy?
  • If you randomly won $10,000 tomorrow, what would you do with it?

These questions will help paint a picture around your current relationship with money and what blockages and barriers you are up against when it comes to changing your mindset.

2. Change your language around money

If you are constantly telling yourself that you have to work really hard for money or that you don’t deserve money, then that’s your reality. If you focus on the scarcity, then you will continue to be scarce. If you want to live in the frequency of financial abundance, you need to change your language about money.

A scarcity mindset is saying, “I never have enough money.”

A sufficiency mindset is saying, “I have enough money to cover my needs.”

An abundance mindset is saying, “I always have more than enough money, and no dream is too big to achieve.”

Focus on what you DO have instead of what you don’t have. Focus on what you WANT to have in life instead of what you NEED. Use positive terminology when you talk to yourself and others about money, and you will start to view money in a positive light.

3. Work with a money mindset coach
